Maui Girl Travels
As a Hawaii swim brand, Maui Girl will always be rooted in the Aloha state. Windsurfing was the sport that launched the brand in the north shore town of Paia, and the women who wear Maui Girl have always been adventurers.
On the road with Maui Girl
Chasing waves and catching sunsets, the endless summer that inspired the brand almost 40 years ago continues today. We teamed up with surfer girls Brittany and Genna in Uvita, southern Costa Rica, where active women's swimwear is a wardrobe staple.
Beach vs Reef break, a good surf suit is key
Unlike the gentle reef breaks in Hawaii, here we get our hair wet. Beach breaks can be relentless and heavy, so our swimwear needs to follow 'suit'. With tide dependent waves and currents, getting into the lineup can be a challenge. Adjusting a swimsuit after each wave only prolongs the paddle out and reduces energy needed for fast pop ups. We require cute suits that stay put!
Be a Maui Girl, wherever you are
Our local surf break is Playa Chaman, convenient to the towns of Uvita and Bahia Ballena. Home to the famous 'whale tale' beach, this area is protected as part of the Marino Ballena National Park. Without development along the beach, wildlife thrives.
A flock of scarlett macaws soar above the canopy of green, landing in their favorite stand of rainbow eucalyptus trees a few yards from the sandy shoreline. Elusive sloths slink through the treetops and massive iguanas hunt from the lower tree line. Howler and White-face Capuchin monkeys swing through the branches along the beach access path. It is not uncommon to return from a surf session to a car covered in monkey poop!
The jungle is alive, vibrant and wild. More dependent on tides than trade winds, a sunset surf is the perfect way to end a busy day. From the vantage point of our boards, a setting sun colors the sky pink, contrasted by the bright green palms that line the shore and mountainsides of dense rainforest rising above.
The perfect set rolls in and we slide left or right, confident in swimwear built for active women. Maui Girl looks good here. Where will it take us next?
